The Division of Surgical Research is the locus of all Departmental research activity. Centered in the Nursing Arts Building on the Rhode Island Hospital campus, the facility comprises 9951 sq. ft. of total space, including 7,724 sq. ft. of laboratory space. The facility also houses a research library, computer room, and administrative office space.

The Division functions under an "open laboratory" basis with equipment freely shared among investigators. Most laboratories not on the Rhode Island Hospital campus are located on the Brown Campus and served by a shuttle bus.

Trainees have full access to the core facilities at Brown University as well as those at Rhode Island Hospital. Both institutions are NIH-supported Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE). Brown University is a designated COBRE Center for Genetics and Genomics, which includes facilities for the use and analysis of Affymetrix Gene Chip Arrays and the construction of transgenic mice.

Library access is provided by the Rhode Island Hospital and Brown University Science Libraries and by the Brown University on-line electronic library resources.

Armand D. Versaci Research Scholar in Surgical Sciences Award

The Armand D. Versaci Research Scholar in Surgical Sciences Award provides two years of salary support for residents or fellows to train under the direct supervision of a qualified mentor. The objective of the program is to foster the development of physician-scientists who will go on to academic careers in surgery.

This award recognizes and supports the research initiatives of outstanding residents and fellows. Aware of the challenges of funding the medical research done by surgical residents and fellows, the Carter Charitable Trust Foundation established the award to help meet the cost of their stipends and to honor the distinguished career of Armand D. Versaci, MD.

Trauma Training Grant

The Department of Surgery is proud to host the Trauma and Inflammation Research Training Fellowship. The present NIH-sponsored program is a superb vehicle for residents to establish the basis of a successful academic career through the acquisition of solid training in basic research.

The program is open to clinicians (MD) and to basic scientists (PhD). MD candidates will be selected among residents in any branch of Medicine or Surgery whose goals include the development of an academic career centered upon trauma research. For the most part, candidates will be considered after completion of at least 2 years of residency training. MD candidates will be expected to complete their residency training after the fellowship. A letter from the Department Chairman or Residency Program Director guaranteeing that the trainee will be accepted back in the residency program at the end of the fellowship program must be obtained before accepting the applicant to the program. Outstanding candidates who have finished their residency training will also be considered.

Applications will consist of the applicant's C.V. and a statement of career goals and expectations. For those candidates who have already identified and contacted a faculty mentor, a brief description of the applicant's research plan endorsed by the faculty mentor will also be required. In addition, letters of recommendation will be considered.
