Fellowship Details

Pediatric Surgery

Encompassing the clinical care, cutting edge research, and academic pursuits of surgical conditions and treatments in infants and children.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery, based at Hasbro Children's Hospital, encompasses the clinical care, cutting edge research, and academic pursuits across a wide range of surgical conditions and treatments in infants and children.

Areas of particular interest to our faculty include pediatric trauma, congenital anomalies, short bowel syndrome, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), fetal surgery and minimally invasive technology. The Division and its members collaborate closely with other researchers on and off campus, including the CardioPulmonary Vascular Biology Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE), the Division of Trauma and Critical Care, the Division of Plastic Surgery, the Divisions of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Neonatology at Women & Infants Hospital, the Department of Medical Imaging at Rhode Island Hospital, the Visualization Research Lab at the Brown School of Engineering, the Injury Prevention Center the Bradley Hasbro Children’s Research Center, and most pediatric and surgical divisions within Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

Research

The Fetal Treatment Program of New England is a collaboration among Hasbro Children's Hospital, the Pediatric Division of Rhode Island Hospital, Women & Infants Hospital and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The program specializes in the treatment of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. The Fetal Treatment Program also participates in several multicenter clinical studies at the national and international levels, and conducts ongoing studies offering the latest fetal interventions for appropriate patients.

Hasbro Children’s Hospital is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. Part of its mission is to conduct high-level clinical research in the management and prevention of injuries in children. Under the leadership of Dr. Hale Wills, its director, the Pediatric Trauma Center conducts several multicenter and single-center clinical studies, including the management of severe solid organ injuries and the use of opioids in trauma care.

The Extra-Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program at Hasbro Children’s and Rhode Island Hospitals is a unique, integrated initiative that offers neonatal, pediatric and adult ECMO under a single umbrella. The program is an Extra-Corporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO)-accredited program that contributes to various multicenter clinical research initiatives.
