Advancing Thoracic Surgery Through Innovation, Multidisciplinary Care, and Education
The Division of Thoracic Surgery at Brown University is dedicated to providing exceptional surgical care for diseases of the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, diaphragm, chest wall, and airway while advancing the field through research, innovation, and comprehensive surgical education.
As part of Brown University Health and The Warren Alpert Medical School, our thoracic surgeons collaborate with specialists in pulmonology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, pathology, and critical care to deliver multidisciplinary, patient-centered care utilizing the latest minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques.
Education is a defining component of the Division's mission. Medical students, residents, and fellows gain experience in the evaluation and management of both benign and malignant thoracic disease through participation in complex operative cases, multidisciplinary tumor boards, clinical conferences, and research initiatives. Trainees develop expertise in robotic thoracic surgery, lung cancer treatment, esophageal surgery, mediastinal disease, and advanced minimally invasive procedures.
Faculty members maintain active research programs focused on improving surgical outcomes, expanding minimally invasive approaches, and advancing multidisciplinary cancer care. Through mentorship and scholarly collaboration, learners are encouraged to participate in clinical research, quality improvement, and national academic presentations.
The Division offers an outstanding academic environment where future thoracic surgeons develop the clinical expertise, technical skills, and leadership necessary to advance the specialty and improve patient care.
