Why did you choose Brown:
The volume/focus on trauma and early involvement in QI/outcomes were big draws for me, but my experience on interview day really sealed the deal. There was a sort of transparency and authenticity that really appealed to me. Everyone was so straightforward and honest about the program/life as a resident and they were all so happy and clearly invested in one another’s success. It felt more like a chat with mentors than an interview. I ended the day feeling at home with the program and so much more comfortable with the idea of surgical residency in general, which is when I knew I’d found the place for me.
Favorite things about Providence and RI:
The architecture! Everyone will say food, which is totally valid. But I hate to be cliché and I’m a huge design nut. I still can’t get over how much eclectic beauty is packed into this little city. You can turn a corner and go from European ~vibes~ to SoHo chic, industrial, colonial, or federal style, and everything in between. You name it, it’s here. Also, the ocean! So much wow.
Plans for the future:
Academic surgery is a safe bet. I love trauma, but plastics is also interesting. Regardless of the field, I’d like to be involved in QI, administration, or even device development. Ultimately, I hope to effect change and improve lives at a level beyond the individual patient.
